Stove help and FAQs
What is kiln-dried wood? Kiln-dried wood is dried in a large wood drying kiln, rather than being left to dry out in the air. This means we can ensure our firewood has a low moisture content throughout the log. Some kilns are heated by gas or electricity. The kilns we use are heated 100% by renewable energy. Why is it better than seasoned (or ‘air dried’) wood? Kiln-dried wood has, on average, a 10% lower moisture content than typical seasoned (or air dried) wood. It is better because it burns more slowly and gives off more heat as the energy of the wood is not wasted burning off moisture. You will probably find that you can light your fire without kindling and that you can keep the air vents on your wood-burning stove closed once the fire is going. You will certainly find that you use much less wood (at home we use less than half the amount of standard seasoned wood) and have a much hotter fire.
